Several patients have died during spinal surgery that involved the use of Norian bone cement. During the operations the bone cement, which has not been approved by the FDA, entered the blood stream and resulted in lethal blood clotting. The families of two patients who passed away have filed lawsuits against the doctor, university and medical center who performed the operation, claiming they knew that the bone cement caused blood clotting and should have not used the product.
This is not the first time that Norian and its parent company Synthes have faced lawsuits for this same accusations. In 2009 they were indicted and forced to pay more than $22.5 million for performing unauthorized clinical trials with the bone cement despite warnings that is caused fatal blood clotting.
